Manchester United Football Club
The club was formed as Newton Heath LYR in 1878 and joined the football league in 1892. The club was renamed Manchester United in 1902. 1905/06 saw the club join the First Division. Things went well and in the 1907/08 season the club were league champions and won the Charity Sheild. 1909 saw the club win the FA cup for the first time. In 1910 the club moved from its ground at Bank Street to the now famous Old Trafford. The club played their first match at the ground against arch rivals Liverpool FC and lost 4-3 in front of an 80000 crowd. The First World War put paid to a considerable amount of footballing activity and the club continued to suffer for many years afterwards to find top form. 1932 saw bankruptcy looming and only 3507 spectators showed up to the first game of the season. The clubs’ fortunes barely improved up to the Second World War when activities were again suspended. In 1945 Matt Busby joined as manager having been a player for Liverpool FC and Manchester City. Matt Busby became enormously influential in the success of the club almost from the start and they won the FA cup again in 1948. 1951/52 saw the League Championship won by Manchester United for the first time since 1911. In 1958 the club was hit by the Munich air disaster that took the lives of 7 players. Matt Busby survived and managed a miraculous recovery in more ways than one and the club won the FA cup again in 1963. In 66/67 they were crowned league champions again and won the European Cup final at Wembley, Sir Matt Busby retired in 1969.
The seventies saw plenty of action and turbulence amongst the management and players and the team found themselves in the second division again in 1974. It was a decade where highs and lows followed each other quickly.
1986 saw the appointment of Alex Ferguson who rewarded the clubs patience by winning the FA cup in 1990 and finally the tide began to turn against Liverpool FC in favour of Manchester United. Manchester United also won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1991.
The new millennium has seen further success – the club opened by winning the premiership in April 2000. Sir Alex presided over three back to back wins of the Premier league in 2001 and it was won again in 2003. The 2004 FA cup title fell to Manchester United but they lost in the 2005 final to Arsenal. The rising stars of 2006 were Rooney and Ronaldo and the team won the Carling Cup and a record 16th Premier League title in 2007.
Manchester United arguably remain the giants of the Premier League and have a place in the highest reaches of the sport world-wide. Their fans can be found in all corners of the world and they have a large following in the Far East.
