The club was formed in 1892 by the merger of two local clubs. St James Park, the club’s ground actually pre-dates the formation of the club having been used since 1880. The ‘Toon’ soon adopted their now famous black and white strip earning themselves the ‘Magpies’ tag.
In the early 20th century the club rose to prominence and was able to field a team of international quality. The post-war years were a great period for the club with domination of Division One and spectator numbers were at their highest. The period continued through the 50’s but ground to a halt in the 60’s.
The following decades were not high points but the club regained the First Division in the early eighties. Many famous names passed through the club during the period and still figure highly in recent memory.
The nineties saw the club’s saviour Kevin Keegan in the manager’s seat and a transformation took place that is still fresh in the minds of the ‘Toon Army’. The late nineties saw further changes of management and some reasonable performances.
The recent past has seen the return of ‘King Kev’ but it proved to be a short term affair.
